Poor Baby

Suzie has had a rough couple of days. We think that she is a little constipated and she has also been vomiting a little. I was wondering if it could have anything to do with the formula I supplement with. She has just been pretty unhappy and seems like she is in pain sometimes. Any of you moms out there have any advice for how to help a constipated baby?? Or tips on what kind of formula to use? Any suggestions are much appreciated:)

Other than that, our sweet girl is doing very well. We had a great first Thanksgiving with her and everyone enjoyed taking their turn to hold her. One of the best things is that Suzie laughed for the first time on Saturday! It was a very short little giggle and if I hadn't been looking at her expression I wouldn't have known it was a laugh, but she did it two more times on Sunday. She smiles a lot too, although Daddy says not often enough for him. She is starting to be awake for longer periods during the day, which is very fun (except for the past two days). She has many fun expressions and we pretty much just dote on her all day long.

We try out our new pediatrician on Monday so hopefully that will go well! Here is a video of our happy girl.

Steph, Yes, the constipation is probably because of the formula. Formula takes longer to digest than breast milk, thus can cause constipation. You can massage her tummy to relieve the tummy pain, move her legs (bicycle motion) to stimulate her digestive system and if that doesn't help, you can add one or two teaspoons of Karo syrup to her formula. Hope this helps. God Bless you all!. Debbie

Kyle and Steph, she is so adorable! I am in awe of what God has done and continues to do in her life (and yours!) Enjoy each moment, they go by so fast!

P.S. Steph, did Kyle tell you I FINALLY finished your scarf????? Hahaha. I'll give it to you at church the weekend after camp!

Steph,
You could also try switching to Soy Formula for a while and see if she does better on that. Conner did much better and was much less constipated while on Soy. He was on Nestle Good Start. Good Luck! She is adorable!

Hi Steph! We used Enfamil Gentlease, which is supposed to be gentler on the stomach. Euan spit up less when he was on that...eventually I put him back on the regular stuff. Also, your pediatrician might have a sample of different formulas you can try to see which works best.

HI Stephanie,
Looks like you have a lot of comments and helpful tips.

I started supplimenting Emma at 10 months with Formula and found constipation was a problem. I switched her over to Goat Milk. I buy it on iHerb.com. If you do decide to go with Goat Milk I'd say ask your pediatrician just to make sure it has all the nutrients Suzie needs for her stage of growth. Emma loves it and still drinks it. Hope this gives you another option to help. Heidi

Hey Steph-I hope this finds you guys doing well. I hope you have figured out something that is helping poor Suzie's tummy. We had the same problem with Addison several weeks ago & it was miserable, so I can sympathize. I think sometimes it is guess work to figure out what works for their little tummy, huh? Two things we did: 1-a lactose free formula (lactose intolerance can cause gas & constipation--we are using Similac Alimentum); 2--a glycerin supository to help get her cleaned out (you can buy these over the counter--our dr had us cut 1 lengthwise into thirds & use 1/3 of it--worked like a charm.) we also give her mylicon gas drops 6 times/day. Esh! I think their poor preemie tummys get all mixed up sometimes. Anyways these are totally just ideas & things that worked for Addison. I hope you find something that works for Suzie!!! Email me if you have any questions. Take care!!!!

It doesn't look like you need any more advice, but I'll "amen" the tummy rubs and bicycle legs. I'll add that sometimes it really helps to do the tummy rubs in a warm water bath.

Thanks for keeping up the blog. Suzie is beautiful!

I love reading your updates, Steph! Thank you! Little Suzie is getting to be such a big lady. So sweet.

I second the bicycle legs and just excercise in general. My kiddos always got a little constipated if I didn't give them enough floor time. A little bit of movement does help with digestion.

Two words... GRIPE WATER! Little Rememdies makes one that you can find in the pharmacy section at Target. It's all natural and works wonders for hiccups and gas.
